    Fire Lane Striping Scope

A complete fire lane installation covers more than the curb. The package usually includes red curb painting along the entire designated fire lane, white “FIRE LANE — NO PARKING” lettering applied at consistent spacing along the curb face or pavement, vertical wall striping where the lane runs along a building face, and posted signs at each end of the lane plus interval signs along its length. We bring all of those into one mobilization so your AHJ sign-off happens on the first inspection rather than the third.

Curb paint is high-build alkyd traffic paint applied with airless equipment for an even, durable coat. Lettering is 4-inch-tall stencil work in white traffic paint per IFC 503.3 minimum-letter-height guidance. Vertical wall stripes use the same red curb paint.

Codes That Govern Fire Lanes in North Atlanta

Fire lane requirements in Georgia sit on three regulatory layers. The federal-style reference is NFPA 1 Fire Code (current edition) published by the National Fire Protection Association — adopted by reference in the Georgia State Minimum Fire Safety Standards (Department of Community Affairs Chapter 120-3-3). The state layer carries any Georgia-specific amendments. The local layer is the county or city fire marshal who has authority on your specific property.

In OTP North, that local layer means six separate fire-marshal jurisdictions: Cobb County, Cherokee County, Fulton County, Forsyth County, Gwinnett County, and DeKalb County (plus the Marietta and Roswell city fire departments for properties inside those municipalities). The AHJ designates the lane location and signs off after striping is complete. We coordinate the marshal walkthrough and re-stripe any sections flagged during inspection within the same mobilization.

The International Fire Code (IFC) Section 503 sets the underlying technical requirements: 20-foot unobstructed minimum width (§ 503.2.1), 13-foot 6-inch minimum vertical clearance (§ 503.2.2), 75,000-pound load capacity (§ 503.2.3), and the requirement that fire lanes be marked and signed in a manner approved by the fire code official (§ 503.3).

Frequently Asked Questions About Fire Lane Striping in North Atlanta, GA

What color should fire lanes be painted?

Red curb plus white “FIRE LANE — NO PARKING” lettering is the standard combination across nearly every AHJ in Georgia. The red curb identifies the lane visually; the white lettering communicates the legal prohibition. Some jurisdictions add yellow accent striping or a yellow border around the lettering — we verify with the AHJ before mobilizing.

How tall should “FIRE LANE — NO PARKING” lettering be?

The default per IFC 503.3 and most Georgia AHJ practice is 4 inches minimum letter height, stenciled in white traffic paint either on the curb face (for vertical curbs) or on the pavement immediately inside the curb (for low-profile or rolled curbs). Spacing between lettering blocks runs 10 to 25 feet depending on local code and lane length.

How wide must a fire lane be?

IFC 503.2.1 sets a 20-foot unobstructed-width minimum for fire apparatus access roads, which is the technical name for what most property owners call the fire lane. Vertical clearance is 13 feet 6 inches minimum per § 503.2.2. Turning radius minimums apply at corners — typically 28 feet inside / 48 feet outside per local AHJ practice.

Who designates the fire lane on my property?

The fire code official — your county or city fire marshal — has authority under IFC 503.1 to designate fire lanes on commercial property. The designation usually happens at the certificate-of-occupancy stage or after a site re-permit. If your lane was striped years ago and the marshal has since requested changes, the marshal designation controls.

How often should fire lane striping be repainted?

There’s no fixed cadence in the code — IFC 503.3 says the lane must be “maintained in a clearly visible condition.” In practice, high-traffic commercial lots in North Atlanta need fresh paint every 18 to 36 months. Sealcoating, snow plowing (rare here), and heavy delivery-truck wear shorten the cycle.

Does the fire lane need to be re-striped after a sealcoat?

Yes — sealcoat covers existing curb paint and pavement lettering completely. After any sealcoat job, the lane needs to be re-marked before the property re-opens to traffic. We commonly schedule the re-stripe to follow the sealcoat by 24 to 48 hours (the sealcoat cure window) so the property goes back into service compliant.
