What Temporary Parking Lot Striping Covers

Temporary striping is parking layout that is meant to come back up. Instead of the permanent traffic paint we use on a commercial lot, the markings go down in a removable water-based paint designed to hold for the run of an event, a construction phase or a season and then be removed or allowed to wear away without leaving a permanent line behind.

The work itself is the same discipline as any other layout: stall lines, drive aisles, directional arrows, accessible spaces and access aisles where the public will be parking, entrance and exit marking, and whatever no-parking hatching keeps the route clear. What changes is the material and the fact that we design the layout knowing it will be taken out again.

Grass, Gravel, Pavement, or Any Surface

This is the part that separates temporary work from ordinary striping. Permanent lot striping happens on paved surfaces. Temporary parking happens wherever the space is — and in this territory that regularly means a field, a gravel yard, a paved lot, or all three on the same property.

• Grass. Fields, festival grounds, school and church properties, fairground overflow. Marking on turf uses a paint formulated for it and is laid out with the ground conditions in mind, since a wet field parks differently than a dry one.
• Gravel. Industrial yards, rural properties, construction laydown areas. Loose surfaces hold a line for a shorter time, so gravel layouts usually lean more heavily on cones, stakes and signage alongside paint.
• Pavement. Existing lots being temporarily reconfigured — a construction phase, a seasonal reallocation, an event that changes traffic flow through a lot that already has permanent striping on it.
• Any other surface. If you can park on it, we can generally lay a temporary layout on it. Tell us what the surface is when you call and we will tell you what will hold on it and for how long.

Event Parking, Construction Phasing, and Overflow Lots

Events. Festivals, fairs, concerts, sporting events, school functions, church holiday services, wedding venues and any one-off that brings more vehicles than the property normally handles. The goal here is throughput and safety: get cars off the road quickly, park them densely without trapping anyone, and keep an emergency route open through the middle of it.

Construction phasing. A live property under construction loses parking in stages, and each stage needs its own layout. Temporary striping is how you keep the accessible spaces valid, keep the fire lane clear, and keep the remaining stalls usable while a section of the lot is fenced off — then re-mark it when the fence moves.

Overflow and seasonal. Retail properties at peak season, garden centers taking over part of a lot in spring, seasonal storage, park district summer programs, and any property that needs more parking for part of the year than it does for the rest of it.

Removable Paint and How Long It Lasts

Temporary marking uses a removable water-based traffic paint rather than the permanent product. The design intent is a line that is clearly readable for the period you need it and then goes away — either removed deliberately or worn off — without leaving a ghost line that confuses drivers for the next two years.

How long it lasts is genuinely variable, and anyone who gives you a fixed number without asking about your site is guessing. The three things that decide it are the surface, the traffic and the weather. A line on pavement outlasts a line on gravel. A line under a hundred cars a day outlasts a line under a thousand. And this is Chicago, so rain, freeze-thaw and snow clearing all shorten it. For a weekend event, none of that matters. For a construction phase running four months through a winter, plan on refreshing it.

Removal timing is worth raising at the quote stage. Markings that have to be gone by a fixed date, rather than left to wear away, change both the product choice and the plan.

How a Temporary Job Runs, Step by Step

1. Tell us the surface, the dates and the vehicle count. Those three facts determine everything else.
2. Walk the site. We look at entrances, exits, the emergency route, drainage, and what the ground will actually do under load.
3. Lay out the plan. Stall rows, aisles, direction of travel, accessible spaces where the public parks, and a route emergency vehicles can use with the lot full.
4. Mark it. Removable paint, plus cones, stakes or signage where the surface will not hold a line well.
5. Refresh mid-run if needed. On a long construction phase, budget a refresh rather than assuming one application carries the whole job.
6. Remove or let it wear. Whichever we agreed at the quote.
