What Sports Court Striping Covers
Sports court striping is laying the playing lines onto a court surface that already exists. On a hard court that means the boundary lines, service and non-volley zones, keys, arcs, center circles and any secondary sport sharing the same slab, applied in durable acrylic court paint that is made to hold up under shoes, weather and cleaning.
Most of what we do falls into three cases. A court is being lined for the first time after its surface goes in. An existing court has faded and needs its lines refreshed. Or a court is being converted, which is by some distance the most common request in this territory right now: a tennis or basketball surface that needs pickleball lines added, either as a shared court or as several pickleball courts fitted inside the existing footprint.
Courts We Line: Pickleball, Basketball, Tennis, and Playground Games
Pickleball. Full courts and, more often, pickleball lines added to an existing tennis or basketball surface. Where two sports share one slab we use a contrasting color for the secondary sport so both stay readable, and we lay out the non-volley zone accurately, because that is the line players argue about.
Basketball. Full courts, half-courts and multi-use slabs — boundary, keys, free-throw and three-point arcs, center circle. School, park district, HOA, apartment and church courts are the typical properties here.
Tennis. Singles and doubles lines, service boxes and center marks, laid to the standard court dimensions.
Playground games. Hopscotch, four square, foursquare variants, kickball diamonds, running tracks, number grids, sensory paths and map games on school and daycare surfaces. There is no governing dimensional standard for these, so they are laid out to the space available and to whatever the school wants.

Two notes worth having before you plan a court. Pickleball’s playing surface is 20 by 44 feet, but the recommended total area including run-off is considerably larger, and fitting four courts into a space that only measures the playing surfaces produces courts nobody enjoys using. And basketball dimensions vary by level of play — the international, US college and US high school courts are genuinely different sizes — so the first question on a basketball job is who is going to play on it.
Striping vs. Resurfacing — What We Do and What We Don’t
We stripe courts. We do not resurface them, and we want to be clear about that up front, because a lot of the businesses that appear alongside us in local search are court builders rather than court stripers.
In practice that splits into two cases. A sound surface — intact, clean, holding its texture — we can line, refresh, or add a second sport to. A surface that is cracked, delaminating, holding water in low spots, or has failed to the point that paint will not adhere needs surface work first, and that is a different trade. Lines applied over a failing surface fail with it, usually within a season. We would rather say so during the site visit than take the job and have you call us back in eight months.
The sequence that works is: surface first, lines second. If you are having a court built or resurfaced, get the surface finished and cured, then bring us in to lay the lines onto it.
Residential Half-Courts and Driveway Games
Not all of this work is commercial. We line residential half-courts and driveway games regularly in this territory — a basketball half-court on a home driveway, a custom-color court for a family, hopscotch and game grids for younger kids, and increasingly a pickleball court in a back yard or on an oversized driveway.
Residential work has its own constraints. The available space is whatever the driveway is, so the layout becomes a fitting exercise rather than a standard one. The surface was poured for parking a car, not for playing on. And homeowners usually want a particular color scheme, which is easy enough on a custom job. We use a contrasting color for the added sport so both sets of lines stay readable during play.
Does the court need resurfacing before you stripe it?
Only if the surface has failed. If it is intact, clean and holding its texture, we can line it as it is. If it is cracked, delaminating or holding water, paint applied over it will fail with the surface, usually within a season. We do not do surface work ourselves, so we will tell you honestly at the site visit which of the two situations you are in before quoting the lines.
What paint do you use on sports courts?
Acrylic court paint made for the purpose, rather than the traffic paint used on parking lots. Court surfaces take a different kind of wear — shoes rather than tires, plus weather and regular cleaning — and the material is chosen for adhesion to court surfacing and for color retention. Line color, contrast between shared sports, and the finish are all set during the walk-through.
How long do sports court lines last?
Several seasons on a sound outdoor surface in this climate, with the exact interval driven by how heavily the court is played and how it is maintained. Winter is the accelerator: freeze-thaw and snow clearing work at any court left uncovered. Courts in constant use, particularly pickleball courts, tend to need attention sooner than the surface itself does.

Yes — those properties are a large share of our sports court striping work. School playgrounds and gymnasium-adjacent outdoor courts, park district courts, HOA and apartment complex courts, and churches. Playground games are included: hopscotch, four square, number grids, kickball diamonds, sensory paths and map games.
