We phase the work section by section, or run it overnight or on a weekend, so there is always parking available and always a way in and out. What actually drives the schedule is cure time, not paint time — the lines go down fast, and then they need to be left alone before traffic crosses them.

A high-turnover retail lot with heavy winter salt use wears far faster than a low-traffic office lot. Louisville helps the wear along: December, January and February all carry normal daily lows at or within a tenth of a degree of freezing — 32.1, 27.8 and 30.7 degrees — while normal daily highs run fifteen to eighteen degrees higher, so lines cycle through freeze and thaw repeatedly each winter.

Kentucky’s Standards of Safety adopt NFPA 1 as the state fire code, while Indiana runs its own fire code built on the 2012 International Fire Code, with fire lane marking triggered by local ordinance, not mandated statewide.
