Parking lot layout design in Myrtle Beach means deciding, before any paint goes down, how many stalls a surface can actually hold, where the drive aisles run, how traffic enters and leaves, and where the accessible spaces have to sit. It is the difference between a lot that holds the number of cars the property needs and one that wastes a full row on a badly angled aisle.

Most of the third category are properties that have changed use since the lot was first laid out: a retail bay became a restaurant, a medical suite added Saturday hours, or a hotel added a shuttle that now needs somewhere to turn around.
What Goes Into a Parking Lot Layout Plan
A layout plan is a sequence, and skipping steps is what produces lots that have to be redone.
- Measure the surface. Usable dimensions, not deed dimensions. Islands, planters, drainage structures, dumpster enclosures and building overhangs all subtract from what can be striped.
- Fix the entrances and the circulation. Where vehicles enter, where they exit, and which direction they travel determines everything downstream, including which side of a space the access aisle belongs on.
- Place the accessible spaces first. They have a required count, required dimensions and a required location on the shortest accessible route to the entrance. Placing them last is how lots end up non-compliant.
- Set the stall angle and aisle width together. These two are a single decision, not two.
- Lay in the fire lanes and no-parking zones. Fire apparatus access, hydrant clearance and any marked fire lane come out of the stall count, so they belong in the plan rather than in a revision.
- Add the supporting markings. Directional arrows, stop bars, crosswalks, loading zones and wheel stop positions.
- Confirm the plan against the property’s own constraints before striping starts.
How Many Accessible Spaces the Layout Must Include
The count is not a judgment call. Table 208.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design sets a minimum number of accessible spaces for each parking facility, scaled to the total number of spaces provided: one for a facility of 1 to 25 spaces, two for 26 to 50, three for 51 to 75, four for 76 to 100, and up in steps to nine for 401 to 500. Above 500 spaces the requirement becomes 2 percent of the total, and above 1,000 it is 20 spaces plus one for each additional 100 or fraction of 100.
Two details in that section catch people out. First, where a site has more than one parking facility, the required number “shall be calculated according to the number of spaces required for each parking facility” — you cannot pool a site’s total and calculate once. Second, van spaces are a subset, not an addition: Section 208.2.4 requires that “for every six or fraction of six parking spaces required by 208.2 to comply with 502, at least one shall be a van parking space.” That is one in six of the accessible spaces, not one in six of every space in the lot.

Stall Angle, Aisle Width, and Usable Capacity
Stall angle and aisle width are one decision in any parking lot layout design. Ninety-degree stalls pack the most cars into a given area and allow two-way circulation, but they need the widest aisle and they are the hardest to enter. Angled stalls at sixty or forty-five degrees are easier to enter, need a narrower aisle and naturally enforce one-way traffic, but each row gives up some capacity to the angle. On a constrained Grand Strand site the right answer is usually driven by the shape of the parcel rather than by a preference.
One measurement rule governs all of it and is worth knowing before you compare layouts. Section 502.1 of the 2010 ADA Standards states that “where parking spaces are marked with lines, width measurements of parking spaces and access aisles shall be made from the centerline of the markings,” with an exception allowing the full width of the line where a space or aisle is not adjacent to another. A layout drawn to outside-of-line dimensions and striped to centerline dimensions will not produce the spaces the plan promised.
Restripe the Existing Layout or Design a New One
If the current layout works and the lines have simply faded, you want parking lot restriping rather than a redesign — it is faster, cheaper and less disruptive, because the existing lines guide the work.
A redesign earns its cost when the property has changed. The signs are consistent: drivers routinely park in ways the layout did not intend, the accessible spaces are the wrong count or in the wrong place, deliveries block circulation, or a resurfacing has erased the old lines anyway and you are effectively starting from blank asphalt. That last case is the cheapest moment to redesign, because you are paying to stripe the lot either way.
