Where it does not work is on failed surfaces — heavy cracking, potholes or crumbling asphalt — because paint bonds to the surface it lands on and a failing surface takes the new marking with it. What is the difference between a new layout and restriping?
Restriping refreshes the layout already on the ground: same stalls, same aisles, new paint. Layout design changes the geometry — stall count, angle, circulation, accessible provision — and needs measurement and a drawing before anything is painted. Restriping is maintenance; a new layout may engage the zoning ordinance and the accessibility standards, which is why it is worth confirming with the City before work starts if you are changing the plan rather than refreshing it.
