What Iowa Code Requires of a Commercial Parking Lot
Iowa binds a commercial lot through two instruments most property owners never see side by side. Iowa Code Chapter 321L is the state’s own accessible-parking statute, with its own scoping table for nonresidential facilities completed on or after July 1, 1991, and its own rule that a space marked only with a painted symbol on the pavement does not satisfy the sign requirement. Separately, Iowa Administrative Code rule 661—201.2(1) adopts the International Fire Code, 2015 edition, as general fire safety requirements applying to all occupancies, and adopts Appendix D, Fire Apparatus Access Roads, statewide rather than leaving it to local option. Section 503 is absent from Iowa’s amendment list, so it applies as published. A lot that satisfies the federal standard can still miss the Iowa sign rule, which is why the accessible-parking and fire-lane pages below treat the state instrument as the operative one.
