Where Wheel Stops Keep an Accessible Route Clear
Most wheel stops go in because an owner wants to protect something. But there is one place where the overhang they prevent is the whole point, and that is around accessible parking.
The federal 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design set the rule plainly at Section 502.7: parking spaces and access aisles have to be designed so that cars and vans, when parked, cannot obstruct the required clear width of the accessible routes next to them. The Standards’ own advisory note to that section says what the fix usually is — wheel stops are an effective way to prevent vehicle overhangs from reducing the clear width of accessible routes.
That matters because of how narrow the margins are. Under the same Standards, an access aisle serving a car or van space has to be at least 60 inches wide and run the full length of the space it serves. A bumper hanging two feet past the stall line eats a third of that aisle. The aisle is still painted, but it no longer does its job, and a wheelchair user coming out of the van has nowhere to go.
Connecticut adds its own dimensions on top of the federal ones. Under Connecticut General Statutes Section 14-253a, accessible spaces designated on or after October 1, 2017 have to be 15 feet wide including 5 feet of cross hatch for passenger cars, and 16 feet wide including 8 feet of cross hatch for passenger vans, positioned as near as possible to a building entrance or walkway. Concrete, Recycled Rubber, or Plastic Composite
There is no single right material — it depends on the lot and how you want it to age.
- Precast concrete is the heaviest and most permanent. It takes repeated contact well and looks substantial, which is why it is the default on high-turnover commercial lots. The trade-off is weight, and the fact that concrete can chip and spall over years of impact and freeze-thaw.
- Recycled rubber is lighter, will not crack or spall, shrugs off the freeze-thaw cycles a Connecticut winter puts a lot through, and usually comes with molded-in high-visibility stripes that stay bright without repainting.
- Plastic composite is the lightest option and resists rot and corrosion, which suits it to spots where you may want to reconfigure the layout later.
