When Temporary Parking Lot Striping Makes Sense

Temporary striping is for parking that has an end date. A festival weekend, a graduation, a six-week construction phase, an overflow field you only open in the summer — none of that justifies permanent lines, and permanent lines in the wrong place are worse than no lines at all, because you have to grind them out later.

The test we use is simple. If the layout will still be correct a year from now, stripe it permanently. If it exists to solve a specific event, a specific phase of work, or a specific season, temporary markings are the right call.

Event and Overflow Parking Layouts

Event parking is a throughput problem. Cars arrive in a compressed window, and the layout either moves them off the road or backs them up onto it. We lay out stalls, aisles, entry and exit lanes, and directional arrows so attendants can point instead of explain, and so drivers can see the pattern from the first row.

Overflow lots get the same treatment on a smaller scale. A church, a school or a business that opens a back field a few times a year usually needs three things marked: where the rows start, which way traffic flows, and where nobody parks — hydrants, gates, and the lanes emergency vehicles need kept clear.

Accessible parking is not optional because an event is temporary. When we lay out event or overflow parking we place accessible spaces and access aisles close to the entrance, on the firmest ground available, and mark them clearly.

Construction Phasing and Lot Reconfiguration

Construction work turns one lot into several lots over time. A building addition takes the north rows, then the crews move and take the east rows, and the parking that worked in phase one is wrong in phase two.

We mark each phase as its own layout and re-mark between phases. That means temporary stalls in the areas still open, temporary aisles and arrows routing around the closed zone, staging and lay-down areas marked off, and pedestrian routes marked from the parking area to the entrance so people are not walking through the work zone.

The advantage of temporary markings here is reversibility. Nothing you paint for phase two has to be lived with in phase four, and the permanent layout goes down once at the end, when the footprint is final.

Marking Grass, Gravel, Pavement, and Other Surfaces

This is where most striping contractors stop, and it is the part event organizers actually need. We mark on grass, on gravel, on pavement, and on other surfaces including compacted dirt and turf.

Grass takes marking paint made for turf. Lines read clearly from a driver’s seat and grow out over time as the grass is cut. Gravel is harder — loose stone does not hold a crisp edge — so gravel layouts lean on wider lines, corner markers and directional arrows instead of fine detail. Pavement behaves the way a normal lot does and takes the cleanest line of the three.

Removable Paint and How Long It Lasts

We use removable water-based traffic paint for temporary work, so the markings come up when the event or the phase ends and do not become a permanent feature of your lot.

Weather is the real variable in this metro. NCEI’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Portland International Airport put roughly 89 percent of the year’s 36.9 inches of rain in the October through May stretch, with November and December alone carrying 11.22 inches against July and August’s combined 1.05 inches. Short-duration markings applied in the wet half of the year face very different conditions than the same markings in midsummer, and we schedule and re-mark accordingly.
